It's far past time for our region to wipe away the coal dust that is blinding us to the beauty of our mountains. The coal companies have fooled us into believing that coal is the only industry for our region and we have had all our eggs in one basket - or one coal bucket - for decades. There is MUCH more to eastern Kentucky than coal. But we have to look past coal to diversify if we are to have a future.

World coal consumption was about 7.25 billion tonnes in 2010 The price of coal increased from around $30.00 per short ton in 2000 to around $150.00 per short ton as of September 2008. In early 2015, it was trading near $56/ton.
