About: Coal still reigns supreme in South Africa | DW Business

Coal power stations are fantastic and essential. They provide base load power which the pathetic alternative energy methods can only dream of. They also make use of the abundant coal reserves SA has been blessed with. Not to use it would be insanity. The electrostatic precipitators remove more than 99% of the particulart matter resulting in an ash emission of less than 50g/ ton of airborne ash. Soon that figure will be lowered to 20g/ton. South Africa's coal power stations burn very low grade coal compared to European power stations and several years ago were one of the cheapest electricity producers in the world. Unfortunately political interference and corruption have resulted in the state owned power producer being unable to provide sufficient power for the country with resulting rotating blackouts.

World coal consumption was about 7.25 billion tonnes in 2010 The price of coal increased from around $30.00 per short ton in 2000 to around $150.00 per short ton as of September 2008. In early 2015, it was trading near $56/ton.
