About: A year of class war - the British Miners Strike of 1984
So glad we closed the coal mines.
The miners had to be taken down to destroy community spirit, divide and conquer. Two weeks after some pits were shut down for being unprofitable, German (Thyssen etc) private companies re-opened some...lies upon lies from the government
Working men and Women of all lands Unite, for a Sane and Just system of society.
The Issue here is that Thatcher was never in danger of being defeated, because all of the power stations had many months worth of coal in reserves. Also in the 1970's when we were all subjected to numerous power cuts, did the miners give a thought for the rest of us? No absolutely not, so why should we give a thought to them?
During the strike the hardworking miners who actually wanted to work were called SCABS. Well my view is that the striking miners were SCABS on the back of the UK. During the 1970's the miners caused the defeat of Edward Heath, this could not be allowed to happen. The Miners were antagonistic and used blackmail tactics against not only the government but also the British people. The pits were closed because of the direct action of the miners themselves. They deserve to be unemployed with no unemployment benefits.
Napolean said that he did not care if his Generals were good or bad as long as they were lucky.
Thatcher was lucky in her enemies in the form of Foot, Kinock and Scargill.
We should remember that she had anialated the Labour party in 83 she had suceeded in bringing the skilled working class onto her side, we are deluded if we could have created a National Strike in support of the miners, even more deluded if we think a Benn led Labour Party would not have imploded as far as the electorate was concerned.
We also need to be realistic that although we denied it and said we were just fighting for the mines we were fighting to bring down a democratically elected government, and we set out to do this not with a weak government like Heaths but one that had just won a landside victory. Why can we be surprised that her response was so strong and so planned, we new it was going to happen yet we allowed her to choose the time and place.
Dave Douglass is one hell of a guy,his intellect is towering, and his books on the subject of the miners strike, his analysis and post mortems of the situation are the product of someone with a clear understanding and great mind.He proves that the working class of this country are by no means stupid, nor can we be rendered voiceless and useless by the metropolitan elite no matter how hard they try.
